What Is a Ripple Log?
A Ripple Log is like being a detective of your own life! Just like detectives write down clues to solve mysteries, you’ll write down your ripples to discover amazing patterns.
Regular Detective vs. Ripple Detective
Regular Detective:
- Writes down clues
- Looks for patterns
- Solves mysteries
- Tracks what happened
Ripple Detective (You!):
- Writes down ripples
- Looks for echo patterns
- Solves ripple mysteries
- Tracks cause and effect
Without tracking your ripples, they just disappear like invisible bubbles. But when you write them down, you start to see incredible patterns that repeat over and over!
Your Ripple Detective Kit
What every good Ripple Detective needs:
A Special Notebook
This can be a real notebook, your phone notes, or even a special journal just for ripples!
Your Favorite Pen
Pick a pen or pencil that feels good to write with. Maybe even a special color!
Detective Time
Just 5 minutes each day to write down what you noticed. That’s it!
Your Curious Mind
Always asking: “What caused this?” and “What happened next?”
Detective Eyes
Looking for connections and patterns that other people might miss!
Kindness
Remember, we’re tracking ripples to make the world more awesome!
The Simple Ripple Formula
Every ripple entry in your log follows this simple pattern:
Step 1 — CAUSE: What did you do? Example: “I helped my friend with homework”
Step 2 — CARRIER: How did it travel? Example: “Face-to-face conversation”
Step 3 — ECHO: What came back? Example: “They helped me in art class”
Bonus Detective Questions
- When: How long did it take for the echo to come back?
- Feeling: What emotion did the echo carry?
- Pattern: Have you seen this ripple before?
- Surprise: Was the echo what you expected?

Sample Ripple Log Entries
Here are some examples to get you started:
Entry 1: The Compliment Chain
Date: Monday
Cause: I told my friend their drawing was amazing
Carrier: Face-to-face, enthusiastic tone
Echo: They showed their drawing to the teacher, who displayed it in the hallway!
Time to echo: Same day
Pattern noticed: Compliments give people confidence to share their work
Entry 2: The Silence Ripple
Date: Wednesday
Cause: I didn’t say good morning to my neighbor
Carrier: Silence / absence of greeting
Echo: They seemed a little sad at school that day
Time to echo: Immediately
Pattern noticed: Even NOT doing something creates a ripple!
Entry 3: The Delayed Ripple
Date: Friday
Cause: I helped a younger kid find their classroom on Monday
Carrier: Kind actions and patient guidance
Echo: They waved and smiled at me every day this week!
Time to echo: Days later (and still going!)
Pattern noticed: Small kindness can create long-lasting positive ripples
Discovering Patterns
After a week of logging, look for these patterns:
Ripple Timing Patterns
- Which of your ripples echo back fastest?
- Which take the longest?
- Are morning ripples different from afternoon ones?
Carrier Patterns
- Which carriers work best for you?
- Do face-to-face ripples create different echoes than text messages?
- Which carriers tend to distort your message?
Echo Patterns
- Do your positive causes always create positive echoes?
- Have you noticed any surprising echoes?
- Are there ripples you created that you didn’t intend?
Your Weekly Ripple Review
At the end of each week, look back at your log and answer these questions:
- Best ripple this week: Which ripple made you feel most proud?
- Surprising ripple: Which echo surprised you the most?
- Pattern discovery: What pattern did you notice?
- Next week’s goal: What new ripple do you want to try?
- Ripple count: How many ripples did you track this week?
